Cholo Word Of The Day - Puñeta
I'm not sure of the exact defition of this word, but it's one that I used quite often. For some reason I used this a lot when I lived in Laredo. We used it to mean a couple of different things, none of which were pleasant. I called one of my old photographers - Chapa, from my reporting days, to confirm the meaning, and he just said, "ha, ha, no, eso esta medio gacho."

Puñeta comes from the word puño, which is fist. So, puñeta in Spain and various Caribbean countries it means to masturbate.
In Spain it can also mean "go to hell" as in váyase a hacer puñetas.
In Puerto Rico the main meaning is to masturbate.

In Puerto Rico we use "puñeta" as "damn", and it usually is an angry expression; it's like the upgrade for "carajo". You would say: "Estoy bien encojonao, puñeta". And we don't use puñeta much to mean masturbation, the vulgar expression for that is "paja", "hacerse una paja".

It definitely means to jerk off. I work in a kitchen with mexicans and dominicans and they use it to mean masturbation or just wasting time. As in:

In the Philippines, today, it's one of those curse words that has no specific meaning... it can be 'damn it!', 'a worthless person'.. but it does have roots from mastubation.. Another spanish word we use as curse word is 'leche'.. yep the milk... it has no specific meaning but we say it a lot :) ... its actually a reference to sperm.. sperm=milk=leche

I have also heard of puñetero saying it to a male or about a male and puñeta for female in the Philippines.
I think it means more than damn. It's a common swear when you're irritated with someone but I think it is one of those words that sounds worse when literally translated to English.

Hi folks. It's a combination of what most of you said. It really depends on `how' you use it.
It can mean:
1. Masturbate, masturbation, jerk off (hacer/me la puñeta or paja)
2. No jodas más puñeta, (don't f**k with me damn it)!
3. It is not strictly a Puerto Rican or Dominican word (whatever that means). It originally comes from Spain.
4. Puñetero, (asshole, jerkoff), etc.
5. It does come from Puño or fist, because you use your puño (fist or hand) to j/o. The person who identified it that way did it very well.
6. It has no relation whatsover to homosexuality. Both genders masturbate, so it applys to both.
So in essence, most of you identified the word pretty correctly

In Davao, city with the biggest population outside Metro Manila in the southernmost (southeast) Philippines, we have more spanish words in our dialect compared to anywhere in the north. About 60 percent spanish words in our dialect which is Davaoeño. As much as 80 percent spanish words in Zamboanga city in southwest Philippines. Their dialect there is chavacano. The country was a colony of Spain for close to 600 years but we all know here that we were ruled via Mexico. Most probably then that the meaning of the words we use would have more credence in Mexico. We use Puñeta and Puñatera, Puñemas, in the same frequency as Putang-ina (your mother's a whore), Leche, Tarantado, Hijo de Puta, Pitiling (embarassingly small dick), Gago, Gaga (ignorantly stupid).
Gaga has no bearing on Lady Gaga. I wonder why she had to use it when she has filipino friends in NewYork who would surely say !!!. Well, I must congratulate her for taming the meaning of gaga somewhat. I want to see how far she can go with in the Philippines. She was just here in Manila or I believe she still is. She won the hearts of so many here. She really knows how to make cariño, how to tease, and make the audience like her.

My ex is from Zacatecas Mexico and my friend's from Sinaloa. They'd use the word puneta or punetas as in hack off or jacking off. AKA masterbation. I've never heard it used in a different way. This is all new to me. Interesting
